PICTURES-WHAT SOUNDS DO THEY MAKE IN YOUR POWERPOINT?

Who else hears the sounds made by the pictures in your PowerPoint Presentation?
No, I am not suggesting that you are hearing things. But you can
add more interaction to your PowerPoint presentations without folks thinking you are crazy.

When you do your next PowerPoint presentation include a few pictures without text. Ask your audience “What sounds do you hear from this picture?”

Note: Be careful to distinguish from sounds versus words spoken. That is another exercise you could use with another slide.

At first your audience may think you are crazy. But stay quiet and they will give you responses. As each person shares the sounds they hear you could, if a small group, record the sounds on a chart. If presenting to a larger group ask someone to record the responses for you.

After everyone shares repeat what has been shared. When a few minutes have passed look at each of the responses written on the chart or paper and ask the person what in the picture made sounds to them.

Find a way to link the points in the picture to learning points in your overall presentation. This will enable you to connect the responses to material you have already covered.

For example, if you show a picture of a sunrise someone in your audience might say they hear the sound of birds. If you were speaking on retirement planning you could comment on retirement being viewed as a new day of opportunity.

You will find it fascinating to hear the perspective of each person as it relates to their perceived sounds. You could also comment on how each person perceives retirement differently based on the sounds they have heard in their life.

This strategy will engage your audience in a lively discussion and provide an interesting transition from the standard slide show process.

Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.

pump up your business presentation

Consider the recent press release from the UK about a company that helps corporations
pump up their business presentations with theater. Very interesting...

Pitch Doctor - the Emergency Public Speaking Antidote for Business Presenters

March 20, 2007 - Press Dispensary - Business people preparing for an important presentation or meeting now have their own emergency service to help them bring the content to life and avoid embarrassing mistakes, thanks to the launch of Pitch Doctor from training company BOP (Behavioural & Observational Practice - http://www.boptraining.co.uk). Whenever preparation hits a difficult patch, a professional trainer is on hand to help direct or fine-tune a presentation - whether there are days, hours or minutes to spare before it must be revealed in front of its awaiting audience.

BOP has created Pitch Doctor and other successful training programmes by blending years of senior management expertise with tried and tested audience-engaging techniques from the theatre. The team's experience – from the Royal Shakespeare Company to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – has helped it develop courses that mix commerce and show business to bring out the trainee’s natural skills and personality.

Peter Stephens, founder of BOP, who has 15 years of experience training national and international corporate clients, said: “The number one fear, above death, snakes and heights, is actually the fear of public speaking. Most people can tell a story among friends but when asked to formalise their presentation, often a deadly wet blanket descends and smothers all those interesting personality traits that help keep an audience engaged. Our training techniques use theatrical skills to ‘turn up the volume’ on the individual’s own presentation style.”

One of BOP’s popular programmes involves a three ‘act’ concept, with each act made up of two days of training. The course takes trainees through the theory and technique behind effective delivery of presentations, the application of these techniques and the end product – actual practice at speaking in front of an audience.

Peter Stephens continues: “Above all, people buy people, which means it’s not only the content of a presentation that secures an audience’s attention; it’s the way the presenter’s personality comes across. Body language and tone of voice account for 93% of the impact of communication, whereas most businesses focus their activity on the remaining 7% - Powerpoint slides over personality.”

BOP’s courses can be tailor-made to suit a company’s needs or picked from the training profiler. The sessions can be run with large groups, small teams or one-on-one, over a timescale to suit the client’s requirements.

PREPARE YOUR DIGITAL PICTURES FOR POWERPOINT

I was excited and proud that I had so many digital camera pictures on my hard drive I could add to my PowerPoint. What I did not have was an organized method for selecting those pictures without wasting valuable time. Thanks to my husband, now I do.
Consider the following POWERFUL tips:

1. After you upload your pictures convert the file to the name of the picture. For example, instead of using the name given by the computer(Default) like P10031 change it to flowers, or golf.
2. Now take a minute right now and go to your Powerpoint program. Look at the tool bar and go to INSERT. You will see the option to insert PICTURE. Once you click on PICTURE it will give you the option to click on FROM FILE.
This will take you to the picture files on your computer. Hopefully you saved them in a folder for pictures.
Now this is VERY IMPORTANT. Many of us do not change the VIEW. No, I am not talking about the TV show. But the VIEW is next to the TOOLS on the Box that just came up called INSERT PICTURE. Do you see it? It is a small rectangle box that does not say view until you drag your cursor on it.
If you click on the BLACK ARROW next to that rectangle box the first choice you have is THUMBNAIL.
Wow, it's almost magic. It changes those files into little pictures so now you know what picture you want to insert.
So, give it a try. If you have any questions email me at rosiehorner@gmail.com
Have fun!

PUT Audio on Your Blog!

There are a host of audio programs out there that can post audio on your blogs. As I research and practice some of these things I will share them with you. I found a site called
This site enables you to not only put a greeting on your sites and blogs but also put longer audio posts and conference calls from your phone.
You also have the option to purchase the service for a small fee for more options.
Their customer support is good. I wrote today with a question and they answered me same day!
So check out my greeting on the blog. Then you try it yourself!

Push Yourself Beyond Yourself

I do not believe in comparing yourself to anyone else. But I do believe in pushing yourself beyond what you "feel" you are capable of doing. As speakers, we should look for opportunities to go beyond our current boundaries.

Look for creative ways to improve our message and how we deliver it.
For example, if we tell stories, consider ways to improve our already excellent delivery.
For example, investing in material from Doug Stevenson, www.dougstevenson.com, an expert in storytelling would be an excellent start. I have some of his material and have practiced some of the techniques. Yet it is time to consider going to one of his retreats in the future. I am very good. But I want to be great!

For some of us an acting class and stage techniques could improve our keynote delivery. Even revisiting Public Speaking Basics by going back to, or joining Toastmasters International, www.toastmasters.org can sharpen already good skills. It will even help as you evaluate other speakers.

Bottom line is DO NOT GROW STALE. Go beyond your own boundaries and excel!

Presenter-Push Stuff Off Your Plate!!!!

If you plan to be a professional speaker it is important to decide on your area of expertise. It is great that you know how to talk about anything but the more focused you are the more marketable you will be.
You might need to not only narrow your focus but also LET GO of some things you are doing that do not flow in the direction of your focus. For example, if you are out of balance with your life, work and family then it is even harder to push stuff off your plate.
Before you go any farther sit down and develop a set of circles. Write down your current activites in each of those circles. These are really symbolic of plates. Now draw portions of food on each of the plates. The food will consist of the tasks your are regularly doing for each activitiy.
Now, depending on your personal values and goals, evaluate what can be pushed off and what can be added.
It is important that you create time to read, research and relate to others.
Speaking can be a lonely business. It is important all your activities are not only focused but balanced.

Promote with online articles-3 Benefits

Take the time to write articles for online submission. There are 3 main reasons I am suggesting this:
1. if you have not written that speech or created that presentation writing an article will help you to focus on your direction. Of course you will keep your audience in mind and craft a message just for them. Of course you have more than one message so that means more that one article.
Just think that article will be viewed by thousands of people. As you check your statistics you will discover several things. It will show you the number of people who have viewed your article, how many have emailed it to someone else, who has posted a comment and if anyone bothered to rank it.
This is great information for you. Now you know which articles are getting viewed based on the title and short description. Could it be possible that naming your keynote speech or workshop with the same title might work after all?
I have only named one benefit. There are more.
Bottom line this is a powerful tool to keep your disciplined, researched and productive.

2. It can place you in the seach engines by using the power of your resource box. Place your links in that box with specific calls to action directing folks to your websites or blogs.
3. You will be more disciplined with your writing. By doing this on a regular basis you are gearing up to write that first or next book.
Of course there are more benefits but wanted to share these with you first.
Have fun and let me know how it is working for you.
Personally, I have been using ezinearticles.com and currently 12 live articles. However, my goal is to have 30 by the end of January, 2007. The article with the most views has a number in the title!!!!!!!! What does that tell ya?
I am considering turning that one into a teleseminar and workshop topic.
Ezine submission sites I know of right now. I will be taking the time to submit articles to each one of them. And yes, you can use the same article.

Put Issues in Postive Perspective-Thinking

It seems that lately I have met with barriers that make me want to dwell on giving up some of my current goals and dreams. But I started practicing what I preach and turned some things around. For example, a critical person I depend on to help with some business goals has not been available. Yet, during that time I have created new avenues to get the job done.
I have misplaced something needed to complete a project. Yet, it is providing me with more planning time before launching.
An inmoble arm, my mouse button, was out of commission for several days. Yet, the slowdown both mentally and ph ysically was needed for recharging.
So much can go on in your mind when you are building a business. Your mind can get cluttered with frustrations, disappointments and barriers. So much you do not have control over. I am reading a wonderful classic by Rev. Robert Schuler(ms) called Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do!!
Super wow. Reading inspirational books really help as well as encouraging words.
The point is ISSUES will always be there. They are like giants . But even giants can be brought down to size.
So, when you get those times when you want to cash it all in, take some time to re-evaluate, re-purpose and renew your dreams with even greater determination to succeed.

PUMP OUT PRODUCT FOR PRESENTATION

One of the most focused ways to produce a product is when you are under pressure to have it ready for a presentaion. I enjoy thinking of something creative and different that can be done by the time I am scheduled to conduct a retreat, workshop or keynote. I am especially motivated if the presentation is not producing a fee.
When you are not going to get a fee for a presentation there is even more of a reason to create a video or audio product.
For example, I was asked to do a keynote for a non-profit organization. They paid for my expenses but did not have a budget for a speaker or learning tools. I taped myself and produced a product which contained a copy of a poem I wrote and read, motivational poster, cd, and encouragement greeting card.
Other times I have interviewed an expert and produced an audio product to share with participants in my workshop. That was done for a staff retreat and included in the overall price for the retreat package.
Overall, there are lots of things you can do. So remember pump out a product for your next presentation!

PRACTICE, PRACTIC, PRACTICE

Under the heading of practice I want to include the critical presentation skills we need to work on until we stop speaking! Diane Diresta, who gave us a powerful closing presentation, was just interviewed on an internet radio show called the Coaching Show on October 4. I thought it would be great to post the link to her powerful interview by Diane Diresta on the blog. Also, she has some real meaty tips on her business presentation blog.
I will post again, I hope, under this topic area. Meanwhile, keep practicing your platform skills whenever and wherever you can.
Yes, that includes crowed elevators! (Smile)

PAY YOURSELF

I recently listened to an excellent cd from the Orlando NSA conference by Richard Parker,
www.richardparkerspeaker.com. His focus was on product development and using an IRA to fund it. He also has a site called www.iraideas.com.
There are a large number of financial experts in NSA. If you go to www.nsaspeaker.org and do a search on financial and tax planning (As of today Oct. 9) you will get 76 profiles and websites of experts who speak on the topic.
The bottom line is all of us, if possible, should be contributing part of our business revenue into some kind of IRA or other retirement savings program.
You can also set up a system to invest portions of sales from products to produce more product.
Of course we should be paying ourselves a salary from any revenue we receive if working the speaking business even part time.
If you are still working part time or full time to keep the bills paid. I suggest starting a savings account that will pay your mortgage(or rent) and payments for your benefits when you are first starting your speaking business FULL TIME.
But try to avoid the temptation to borrow from yourself unless you have a systematic plan for repayment.
I am not a financial guru but I enjoy reading the Wall Street Journal to keep up with financial trends. This speaker business is a BUSINESS and needs a constant review of resources, revenue and return on investment.
I would be interested in hearing ways others are paying themselves.

Publish

There are a lot of printers and publishing houses out there if you want to self publish. I really encourage you to visit www.parapublishing.org for super resources. Some publishing houses will do everything for you except marketing.
Many people will read Dan Poynters book, Self Publishing Manual or The Complete Guide to Self Publishing , by Tom and Marlyn Ross. Both are excellent. DO NOT GO TO THE LIBRARY FOR THEM-YOU NEED YOUR OWN COPIES FOR REFERENCE.Also, consider www.instantpublisher.com for print on demand. Many people are using it. If you have other resources please make a comment.
Some printers will even make the postcards for you and give place the bar codes on the books. Take your time to submit the info and gather your prices. Take advantage of the competition out there. Some printers will send you free self publishing kits.
I suggest developing a worksheet that you can record all of your comments for each printer you submit a request for price to. Also, ask each printer to send you a sample of thier work.
You may get a lot of free books(smile).
I would also suggest you get a copy of Writers Marketplace if you want to submit your material for publication by someone else. There is also a Photographer Marketplace for submitting photos!

I will be sharing more. And I look forward to your resources.

PROMOTE, PROMOTE,PROMOTE -AD TRACKING

This morning I received the notice below in my email on ad tracking. Now, do not get intimidated by this but please keep this info. Once you put up your website and start selling products you will need to keep track of your promotional ads.
This is great information and a powerful tool.
So, read the info below. keep this advanced info in mind when you start to sell products on your site.
The info comes from Practice Pay Solutions. They provide resources for merchant accounts as well as a shopping cart. I am currently on the 30 day trail period for the cart and already using the merchant account.
But let me tell you a SECRET. The shopping cart they use is 1shoppingcart.com. This is the same cart as kickstartcart and the same as webmagic. The owners of them have paid for private labeling which you can do also if you have the money.
You decision as to which one to choose should be based on your relationship with them and support you can receive beyond the support the cart provides.
For example, if you are already in the Tom Antion network you might, of course, use his cart. I am in both networks with practice pay and Antion. But I also get a lot with Fred Gleek. All three. plus others I did not mention, add value. In a later posting I may talk about internet marketing but there is sooo much I am still learning. ANYWAY BACK TO AD TRACKING
Cut and paste
the link below for more info.

Dear Rosemary:

What is an Ad Tracker?

An Ad Tracker tracks the effectiveness of your ads. It will tell
you how much traffic you are getting whenever you place a
reciprocal link to someone's site or whenever you place an ad
online.

A system that tracks ad click-throughs is a very useful tool, but
nothing new to the Web. Professional Cart Solutions goes much further, and tracks
your click-throughs, and Sales per Click! It will even automatically
apply a Coupon Discount for everyone who clicks through. This makes
our Ad Tracker head-and-shoulders above what most other similar
systems have to offer.

You can even use the Ad Tracker to track impressions (the number
of times your ad is displayed on a website; sometimes called
?page views?).

Furthermore, the Ad Tracker is campaign-specific. This means
you can track your ads on multiple sites simultaneously. So, for
example, if you have three ads: two banner ads, one with Giant Ad
Company costing $50, and one on Link Exchange costing $85,
plus a pay-per-click listing on overture.com (5 cents per click),
you can track all three for clicks and sales-per-click.

The ratio of the number of click-throughs on
an ad to the number of sales generated by that ad is called a
conversion rate. The Ad Tracker displays this rate for you
automatically.

In our example above, let's say your Giant Ad Company banner generates 2000 click-throughs, and 2 sales, at a
total cost of $50; your Link Exchange ad generates only 200
click-throughs but 20 sales, at a total cost of $85; and your
Goto.com listing generates 400 clicks and 10 sales at a total
cost of $20. Judging by clicks alone, you would think the Giant
Ad Company banner is the best ad ? but the Ad Tracker will display
conversion rates of 0.1%, 10%, and 2.5% for these three ads.

The Giant Ad Company ad, though generating thousands of click-
throughs, has a tiny conversion rate compared to the Link
Exchange banner ad, and your overture.com listing is also much better.

In this case, you would obviously drop the Giant Ad Company, and
maybe consider paying a higher listing rate on Goto.com for
even more hits, since the cost for those sales was quite low.
So already the Ad Tracker would be helping you focus your
advertising for maximum cost-effectiveness.

How does it work? Simply create a new Ad Tracker counter on our
server which points back to your site. Whenever you place any
online ads, instead of pointing the link directly back to your
site, you should direct it to the Ad Tracker. That way we can
report to you how many actual visitors are coming to your site
via that link.

How do I get it? To use an Ad Tracker, simply log into your account
and click on Ad Tracker.

You will find more information about setting up an Ad Campaign
by clicking on User Guide within the system or by going to
http://www.profcs.com/manual.

Sincerely,

Professional Cart Solutions

Put up a blog-- why do it?

As promised I will begin to post segments under the points (which all start with P)I introduced for the 10 minute segment. It was really great to meet many of you today in New York. I had to make sure I got my appreciation for spending time with you out before I continued.
Many of you might ask, "What will a blog do for me and my business. Well, if we go back to the PLAN point, that is a great question.
We need to know why we would spend the time (and if you are hosting a blog) the money.
Here are a few reasons I have read about.
1. It can contribute to establishing you as an expert in your field if you focus on one area.
2. Search engines like blogs and folks can find you.
3. You can always post fresh content so clients will look forward to seeing your perspective on issues.
4. It can create community and make you accessible and human.
5. Will give you an opportunity to RANT.
6. You can use it as a journal to record musings, book material, and STORIES.
7. You can use it to do "after the event" postings for continued discussions.
8. You can post pictures on it faster than you can on your web site.
9. You can write articles with built in affiliate links.
10.You can cover the events of a short term campaign or fund raiser.
11. You can provide a place for clients or customers to post questions about your service or products.
There is more but I think that is a start.
